Yes video games are very important. They develop or improve the following:
creativity
imagination
thought process
problem solving
goal setting
hand eye coordination
sportsmanship
dancing skills (DDR MAX)
guitar playing skills (Guitar Hero)
aim (shooting games)
social skills
relieve stress

Everything in moderation though... some guys (and girls believe it or not) spend too much time playing and neglect RL things.

Hmm Well I could get on a really large soap box on video games and kids. I am not even referencing "bad" video games, but rather the aspect that sadly video games has replaced playing outside for many kids. This really jacks up their development.
Lets just say I can tell when a kid has spent most of their developmental years playing video games just by seeing how they hold a pencil.
I have actually wrote the makers of V-smile and told them what jackasses they were for coming out with Baby V-smile and marketing as something that aides in development.

Gameplay by far, Some next gen games look great but play like a f*ck nugget, sure graphics are nice to look at but gameplays the best. Street Fighter 2: great gameplay lol bad graphics (even to this day i claim it to be one of the best fighting games) an example of a bad game with good graphics would be, Blacksite area 51 thats bugged up the *** big time

I think the Nintendo Wii is a great invention, it provides entertainment for kids/adults as well as encourages them to get up and get a little physical activity.

Now I want a Nintendo DS and the game 'Brain Age' ... It's worth having it for games like that.

*make you smarter
*improve your eye coordination skills
*let's you have fun and chill with multiple friends
*creates social environments
*are the source of a good sleepover on the weekend
*keeps you from being lonely when friends appear and wanna play
*enables you to learn how to share
*helps keep the blood in your noggin flowing

In short, yes. Very much so!

I don't know about important, but they're difinitely good entertainment. Some of them are pretty mindless, but I play the ubernerdy ones like Brain Age and My Word Coach.

yeah, I remember as a kid we'd do Super Mario marathons and we'd pass it around after each level...builds camaraderie...by the way, Alex Trebec said that one of the reasons why men win more than women in Jeopardy is coz we're quicker with the buttons due to video games...see?

uh no I don't think they are important. I don't play them and my imagination is fine, and I can think quickly regardless. Video game makers just tell parents that so they buy the games.... some are made specifically for educational purposes, but please tell me how "Madden" makes your imagination more colorful or your brain work faster...
