A couple years ago. Smell of gas was strong. We went to the neighbors' and used their phone. I called 911, tho my husband wanted me to waste time finding the phone book and finding the number for the gas company. He said 911 was just for emergencies. (Isn't a gas leak an emergency?) So. A fire truck, and an ambulance were soon at our house. A little while after that, the fire chief showed up in his own car, as well as a guy from the gas company. They evacuated the houses in the immediate area, and blocked off the road so no one would come close. They agreed with me that the smell of gas was very strong. They went thru my whole house, decided the only leak they could find was outside, by the meter. And when it was done, the guy from the gas company said he could still smell propane. Gas grill tank in the garage was half way open. Not one leak at my place, but two. My husband griped to them that I could have saved them a lot of trouble by just finding the number in the phone book, not bothering the 911 folks. Fire chief told him that it was very possible that the house might have blown up in the time it took to do it that way.

This is a true story: During the SARS scare, I awakened at night and had trouble breathing. I called 000 and then realized I was not in Australia, so I dialed 911 and gasped my symptoms. An ambulance was at the door within minutes, and I spent the rest of the night in hospital where it was determined that it wasn't SARS at all. I was merely suffering from heartburn - actually, a reflux valve problem for which I now take medication.

About some weeks back when I went to a party and when I left I went around back, and it smelled like there was a meth lab at the neighbor's.

Ahh I didn't call 911 tho... I called the non-emergency line.
Darn it! Close enough.

Ha you got lots of replies from Australia, anyway the last time I call 999 (UK) was 5-6 years a go when I found a man collapsing on the street, unfortunately it turned out he was drank.

I work in a public school. It was right after I ate the meatloaf in the cafeteria, and then found out the hard way what its ingredients were! (Not to be taken seriously).
