There is a button marked "overdrive" on the gear shift lever of my car (toyota corolla se limited). what is this for? when to use it? how?

The button is to turn the overdrive off. You may want to turn the overdrive off if you are pulling a trailer uphill, or even downhill, if you want the increased engine braking to help slow the vehicle. Normally, you don't need to push this button at all.

When you turn off the overdrive, it will normally also give you higher shift points.
