Best value, get an HP. If you want to go cheaper, go for an Acer. Either one of this is fine, difference is the price and a bit of quality on the outer case/keyboard.

They're pretty durable as long as you know what is the proper usage for a laptop.

As for specs, get at least the following:
- Centrino Core Duo (any speed)
- 120GB HDD (if you like music and videos) or higher
- Bluetooth and WLAN
- 15.5 or 17' widescreen
- 1GB DDR or higher
- CD/DVD-RW
- built in webcam

And don't forget to get a good wireless optical mouse, laptop case and the laptop stand (with the fan) so if you can place it anywhere without risk of overheating.
