It is better to be safe than sorry or thinking you are just going to be sent back home, if you feel like you need to go then go.

I went to the hospital myself when my contractions were 4 mins apart and lasting for 1 minute. My house was only 3 blocks from the hospital though, and I was not in a high-risk pregnancy. In a "normal" pregnancy and if your house is within 15 mins or so from the hospital, every 5 mins on the contractions lasting for a minute is considered the recommended time by most Drs. If this is a second or more pregnancy, it is normal for labor to go faster also, keep in mind. A good rule of thumb is if your gut instinct says to head to the hospital, then get in the car and go. Some women deliver very quickly. Good luck and God bless!

When should I go to the hospital ?
The big question in the mind of every pregnant woman is when to go to the hospital to give birth to her baby. Towards the end of pregnancy you may have many contractions that may lead you to believe that you may be in labor. Here are some tried and true ways to decide if it's really labor and if you're ready to go to the hospital for labor and delivery.
Ask your doctor or midwife when they would like you to come to the hospital. They may have special rules for you because of your medical history or for some other reason.
Don't go into the hospital too early. You are usually more comfortable in early labor in your own home or environment. Going to the hospital too early has been linked to an increase in interventions.
If you aren't given a specific time to go into the hospital, use the 411 method: Contractions four (4) minutes apart, lasting one (1) minute, for at least one (1) hour.
Your practitioner may tell you to stay home a bit longer if you are planning on an unmedicated birth, usually because of the comforts of your own home.

I had this same question not too long ago and I consulted my doctor(s) about it. I was told when my water breaks (is a must), and/or when the contractions are between 5 and 10 minutes apart for about an hour.
Doctor also advised me to sit in the back because I'd probably be in so much pain I'd try to take over the steering wheel, and having a belly reaching from the back makes it more difficult.

I'm guessing you are about to have a baby, congratulations. You definitely don't want to go if you're not sure. It's a huge ordeal to go through and just to be sent home disappointed. But usually a rule of thumb is if your contractions are 5 minutes apart for over an hour and are strong enough to inhibit walking and talking through them. If they aren't very strong, I'd say wait. Good Luck.

about 5 mins apart lasing 45 secs to 1 min, depending how long it takes you to get to hospital i live about 40 mins away and its busy so i have to allow time for the distance and the time of the day it is. As i cant stand being in hospital, but i have to as i bleed very heavily enough to have serious complications. Hence the timing!!!!

I am assuming that you are referring to the signs signalling the end of your pregnancy. There is no such thing as going to early if you suspect labor. While you may end up going home or waiting for long periods of time, you will be where the doctor and nursing staff can get to you should you need it.

The first answer made me LOL. I don't think she realized it was the pregnancy section.
I'm not exactly sure when would be good for you.
This is my first, but I am going to wait as long as I can. I do know that if you wait to long, and are to far dilated you can risk not being able to get an epidural.
Have a talk with your OB, s/he will probably have you call her/him or a nurse when its time, They will time your contractions while you are on the phone with them, and let you know.

Usually, a doctor will ask you to call him or her when your contractions are a certain length apart - say, five minutes. If you're having contractions now and they're that close together, call your doctor and see what you are advised to do. If you don't have a doctor, go to the hospital.

you will know when you go into labour, when your contractions start or your waters break whatever comes first then ring hospital and they will tell you what to do, they will most likely tell you to stay at home but thats what they are there for, each pregnancy and labour is different so you can predict when to go in so listen to the midwives and do what they tell you, if you are ever unsure at any point ring them, doesnt matter how many times you ring them you want to feel sure of what you are doing

when u have light contractions it isn't so necessary, otherwise you should check it out. When you're water breaks you HAVE to go to the hospital. Don't worry about it, just take everyday as it comes. I went twice for a false alarm but it's better to go to the hospital then to ....
