At this time of year in midcoast Maine, our rush hour traffic usually consists of me and a couple of other cars, lol. Summer time is a whole different story....I take the back roads and stay off US1 as much as possible.

I moved from Southern California to an area with only 1 freeway. I handle peak traffic by not going out during those hours or taking surface streets! When I do have to I take it in stride, but that's because I seldom have to drive in it.

I live in northern NJ, so I experience very heavy traffic at peak times. I've gotten much more mellow with age, and take it in stride. I give myself plenty of time to get places. I carry a book to pass the time when I arrive early, and a cell phone to call ahead if I can't make it in time.

It's fairly easy to wait it out now that we're retired.

I was living in Los Angeles County when I got my first driver's license (at age 25), and when you live in the county and have to drive to town for work, you learn to be VERY patient.

It helps to allow yourself plenty of time; take into consideration that a collision ahead will delay you.

You also learn to move over toward your exit lane before you reach it so you're not darting across 4 lanes to exit.

The next thing that helped with traffic woes was that I began working nights when I moved back to my hometown. When you go to work at 2 p.m. and work sometimes 10-hour days to go home at midnight, there's no such thing as traffic.

We tend to allow more time for the journey if we are travelling at peak times and just take it steady. A lot of areas here have had the speed limit reduced to 30mph especially through built up areas like towns and villages so unless folk want a speeding ticket (we have speed cameras everywhere too) then they have to take it steady too. Road rage is dangerous and there have been incidents where people have "lost" it completely and fights have ensued. It is not worth losing your life over!

I agree with howdiget. Keep calm don't let the aggressive drivers get to you. Concentrate at all times. Getting distracted is the worst ( by changing channels on the radio, answering mobile phones etc ) I try to tell my grand-children the same. Having been nearly wiped out twice by speeding teenagers, once from the back when I was stationary I speak from experience. I'm a calm driver with a clean record and mean to keep it that way.

When I lived in South Florida, the traffic was horrendous and it would take about an hour too get home, more in the tourist season. I learned to "trick" my mind, it was the one whole hour to myself, without other people having me to something for them, answer a phone, take an x-ray, do vitals, answer questions then cook for them, clean for them, it was my "free time" before I got home to take care of a husband my 2 kids, his 4, him, the house and the pets. I used to blast the radio and just sing. I couldn't change the traffic, but I could change the way I felt about it. It did save my sanity

If I have to be stuck in rush hour traffic I prefer to be alone. I sing in the car to music or talk to God. Hubby gets real impatient, and it can be stressful. The other drivers can't hear him, but I get to listen to it. I don't understand why anyone gets that upset. It's a much pleasant trip if you go with the flow. Fussing doesn't get you where you're going any faster.

If it bothers you, avoid heavy traffic. Has little to do with age and a whole lot to do with patience and personality.
I don't let anyone get on my nerves. Good way to bang up my car, just not worth it. I don't let anyone push me, or rush me and never have. If 'Mr. I'm in a hurry' is behind and on my bumper, I turn off and go around the block. Let him get in front of me.
Just chill.
