Years ago, the small town I lived in was at the bottom of a large valley. The train tracks followed the mountain side all the way down making a complete circle of the town. It was so neat to set out side at night to watch and listen as the 1007 made its way down. It took 35 minutes.
We called it the 1007 because every night at 1007 it crossed the first road crossing which the engineer sounded the horn.

I bet it does sound good in the distance. We live right beside a train track. You should hear it when they slam on the brakes & each car goes "bang bang bang" all the way down the tracks! And what about that whistle? We live right on a crossing & it will almost pierce your ears when it blows! Yes, I thing it would sound a lot better from a distance.

The tracks are a good five miles away, but on a clear night at times you can hear it. One time a tornado was close and it rumbled like a raging locomotive....that was scarry! It was dark then and hard to figure out exactly where it was....son of a gun...I'll take the five mile distance thing....

I can hear a train, but it is not so far away. Before, we lived in Victorville, Ca (High Desert). There were many trains very close by, alot during the night. I learned to block the noise out, so I could sleep. So glad to be back in the OC(Orange County, CA)..

Yes I can. The tracks are about 2 miles away. The funny thing is how it sounds so much clearer at night. The cooler the night, the clearer it sounds also.

No, I can hear my husband snoring...or when my baby moves out of range of the breathing monitor, I hear a horrible alarm that makes my wide-awake and goggling like a crazy person.
Amazing what a man can sleep through, eh?

No, that's your heart pounding in your ears, it sounds sort of like a train, listen real careful and you'll notice it.
