What does the us suffix mean?

It's the male form. Females ended with "a" to whatever their father's names were.

So Julius's daughters were called Julia, Claudius's were Claudias; same with Octavius, etc.

Apparently sons could have different names, but I have read that all of a Julius's daughters were called Julia, which might have been confusing, but the younger ones had nicknames.

This is why the first Caesar, who was named Octavius, had a sister named Octavia. Of course, he later became Caesar Augustus.

Not all roman names end in us. Some do, but thats the result of the Latin language. If your interested in the topic, google English to Latin translators and experiment to learn the language and how it works.

It denotes that it's a man's name. If the name ended in an "a" it would be a woman's name.
