Yesterday, I stepped off an unexpectedly deep curp and my ankle gave out. I remeber I heard something, but I cant remember if it was a snap or a pop. It hurt really badly, so much that I couldnt cry, and I couldnt move it at all. I have already weak ankles, and when my dad lifted me up, my ankle wouldnt support my weight. It was his birthday, and i didnt want to ruin it, so I hobbled into a mexican restaurant, mainly just hopping on my right foot, and dragging my left behind. I came home, took some ibuprofen, and elevated it with ice on it, but it was still swollen when I went to bed. Then this morning, I woke up, and I couldnt do a thing with my ankle. I ended up getting some crutches. I couldnt keep my balance very well and I had to use my hurt ankle to support me a couple times, which didnt work well. I've had it wrapped up with ice for hours and it finally looks like the swelling is going down. It still hurts like mad though. Do you think its a sprain or do I need to go to the ER?

its a hard call without being able to examine it. However, based on the mechanism of injuries both scenarios are likely. I would suggest getting an x ray to rule out a fracture in the meantime i would apply the treatment RICE...

R- rest
I- ice -- ice for no longer that 15 mins. i would suggest icing every hour for 15 mins and removing it for 45 mins. Repeat every hour for a min of 4 times a day.
C- compression- wrap your ankle in an ace bandage or a similar wrapping. Be careful not to leave gaps because swelling can pool there.
E- elevation- keep your ankle elevated above your heart, i.e. lie down on your back with your ankle propped up on a pillow.

I hope this helps. Try this first, until you can get an X ray to rule out a fracture. Good Luck and Get well Soon

Definitely go to the ER without delay. You need a physician to give you the right diagnosis and talk with you about treatment options. Take care of this now.

ER. I've broken my ankle before, very similar. But don't go to the emergency room, go through normal admission or they'll screw you with the charges.
