One thing that I actually asked for this Christmas was a Garmin handheld GPS. I don't know if you've ever heard of geo-caching, but it's this cool new scavenger hunt type game. You log on to the website and get coordinates of a cache somewhere near you, then you use your GPS to go out and locate it. There will be a sign in book, usually along with a trinket of some sort that was left by someone before you. You take it and leave something for the next person who comes around. My kids are 12 and 8 and it sounded like something fun that we could do together, but I could really see it as being something that a smart, outdoorsy teenage boy could get into too. You can get the Garmin Etrex for under $100, and learning how to use a GPS may come in handy for him someday.

umm ok here is my idea. i have a 13yr old brother.
get a surfer like necklace....not girly...like a chain. cheap ones are really good, they dont last forever, but neither do the expensive ones. i'd say put the maximum of $10 into that.
If he's into chess he most likely already has a chess board.
Umm chances are a lot of people will get him surfer things.
Get him a basketball ($15) and a hoop (all boys like basketball...hopefully) so thats about $40 altogether, including the necklace.
for the surf shop voucher i would say $40. shop around for a nice cheap surf shop.
good luck.

Chess is so old fashioned. How about the Grand Theft Auto boxset?
Nothing says "Merry Christmas" like a video game drive-by while you're on the run from the cops.

Does he like music? Maybe you could by him a $25 or $50 i-tunes gift card. You can redeem them online to buy 25 or 50 songs, respectively. That gives him the freedom to pick and choose. Either that, or get him some sort of game. (video game, or board game, doesn't really matter) see if you can find out from his friends what he might like.

Books I think are good, because they encourage the imagination. Thrift stores might have some trendy type clothing. I don't always have to have a certain brand clothing, so I doubt I would make sure my kids did (they're too young now to know the diff)
Check out ebay for those brands, though.

Why don't you try PSP or try asking his family or friends what he like so that you will other idea aside from what you know already. If you want you can give him the money so he could save to buy for what he wants.
