Very authentic source... I heard they are killed just because their parents are poor and they can't afford the expenses of the girl's marriage (when she grows up, of course), knowing that these illiterate tradition-oriented parents do not allow girls to work. Male babies, on the other hand, are considered a blessing since males are allowed to work and therefore bring fortune. This is happening!!! Everyday!!

The data of 3000 female children killed every day is not palatable at all. This might have been true about 30 years back but it is not so at present. The Govt.Of India was alarmed by the declining numbers of females found in the census and has initiated a good numbers of steps to eradicate the evil of killing female child at birth. A number of amenities/benefits are now available for rearing of girls. Concessions are given for their education and medical care.In many states, cost of marriage is borne by the Govt. and many necessary items required for setting up a new home is provided by the Govt. The police authority too have become more vigilant and any report of infanticide is thoroughly probed and guilty are punished. The times are changing fast in India and girls are getting education in a large scale, they are taking up various professions which were hitherto taboo for them. The dowry system is also declining at a very rapid pace and acceptors/demands of dowry are looked down by the society. As a result of these measures, the rate of killing female children is dwindling very fast.
