Hitler's coming to power, and building up the armed forces in excess of the restrictions placed by the Treaty of Versailles. Eventually, Hitler would withdraw Germany from the League of Nations.

Mussolini and Italy invaded Ethiopia in 1935 and later took over Albania with nothing more than rhetoric from the world. Hitler would later remilitarize the Rhineland in violation of Versaille and the Locarno Treaty in early 1936.

Also, Germany and Italy sided with Franco during the Spanish Civil War and openly sent troops and assistance to him in his overthrow of that country while the rest of the world said nothing.

And of course...the anschluss with Austria, the takeover of the Sudetenland and eventually all Czechoslovakia and then invading of Poland.

French and English leaders remained craven in the face of continuing, escalating demands and actions by Hitler....Sudetenland, anschlaus with Austria, invading Czechoslovakia......

this policy later became known as appeasement. Cowardliness would be more appropriate, and has earned Nevile Chamberlain a place in history with the blood of 30 million dead on his hands.

at almost anytime before Sept 1 1939, if the Brits or French had said"enough" and backed it with mobilization, it was very likely the established German power base....the old families, industrialists, and military who hated Hitler and his band of goons....would have thrown Hitler out on his rump.

The Brits and the French didn't have the guts to do so.

as they say, the rest is history.
