having 2 drives go bad in that short of a time indicates that there is something else wrong.
What are you doing before it gos out. ( with it that is.)
Hard drives are very delicate devices and even the slightest sharp bump can crash the media causing damage.
you might want to baby your computer a little more.
Now with that having been said, if the drive is under warranty, just get another one asap.
that sound is not normal for any computer component.
better keep your receipt handy.

Just backup your data and if it goes you can get another warranty repair.
With hard disk noise there's a good chance that it'll be fine but if you are concerned you can just back things up (and you should be doing that all the time anyway).
If a hard drive is failing you really can't tell how long it'll have to go (but if you see any bad sectors on the drive then it needs replacement ASAP).

Short answer: Yes, this is very possible. Grinding noises are a symptom of a bad harddrive.
Long answer: Somethings that have work for me before. Don't know what OS your using, going to assume XP since its the most widely used.
Go to My Computer>Right Click your C: drive or Main Hard Disk>Click on Properties>Go to "TOOLS".
Click on "Check now under Error Checking> check both boxes and start. This might help. It help some problems with old drives that I have had.
Also reformatting the Hard drive might help too.

Most laptops suck in cooling air through their bottoms. If the laptop sits on an uneven surface like a blanket, pillow, or your lap, the flow of air into the laptop is disturbed. Subsequently, the cooling is not optimal, heat builds up, the surface becomes hot, the temperature of sucked in cooling air increases, and eventually the laptop overheats. This scenario is easily avoided by keeping the laptop on a hard and flat surface. You can use something as simple as a tray or get a special laptop holder or lap stand. Or invest in a laptop cooler!

It is very possible, I would always have a backup of any data that you consider important. You mentioned that its still under warranty if I were you I'd have it replaced.
