Safe? Define safe...
1) I'm going to first assume HIV...
As a medical student...I know the risk is miniscule...but lets look it up on google (yes, you'd be suprised how often real doctors use google to look up what prescription they should give you)...
"The overwhelming evidence points to the fact that kissing, including French kissing, is in no way a risk for transmitting HIV. You don't need to get re-tested if the only potentially risky activity you've engaged in was French kissing with an HIV positive partner." From http://dphwww.sfdph.org/sfcityclinic/drk/hivaids26.asp
============================
Of course...if you're google shy, here's a scientific article (its in french...you can buy the article and use babel fish to translate for you or just take my word)...
"No epidemiologic study has concluded that kissing with mutual salivary contact can lead to infection, but oral-genital sex may pose a risk."
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?Db=pubmed&Cmd=ShowDetailView&TermToSearch=1609320&ordinalpos=2&itool=EntrezSystem2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.Pubmed_RVDocSum
======================================
In summary, you don't need to inquire HIV status if all you do is French kiss...if you do other stuff...maybe you should...
2) Other STD's...
Here's the almighty google again...
"HOW IS IT SPREAD?...Kissing a person with a sore (chancre) on his/her mouth or lip" http://www.lagaycenter.org/site/apps/nl/content2.asp?c=mvI4IhNZJwE&b=1052429&ct=1427323
"And, don't forget, there are some activities that are very low risk or have no risk at all that are fun, too: self-masturbating, hugging, dry kissing, dry humping, or non-genital massaging." [French kissing is listed under low risk]http://wguide.uchicago.edu/5stis.html
"What STDs are generally transmitted through kissing?
It is very rare to transmit STDs like gonorrhea, chlamydia or syphilis through kissing. Likely the only STD that can be transmitted by kissing is herpes -- the one that gives blisters or fever sores on the lip. Other than that, go ahead kiss away." http://www.gay.com/health/hiv/?sernum=1870
====
For the other STD's, depends on how much risk you're willing to take.
I personally would never deal with an escort (no real love and too likely to have something from their last customer). But I've french kissed before (ok, it was a date that lasted for 2 years)...no STD's resulted from that.

As soon as you put your lips on someone else's lips, you have exchanged germs. Slipping someone the tongue isn't going to help or hurt. The fact that it is a stranger or an escort is the real problem. You have no idea where those lips or the tongue have been.

Well face it: exchanging saliva? Thts not too healthy. French kissing is definately not the healthiest thing to do in your spare time but its definately not exactly dangerous. Maybe you will catch a cold or the flu but thts about it really. Some web sites i visited said it could actually be healthy in some ways......interesting :)

No less hygienic than drinking out of a toilet bowl! Use some common sense. How do you know where the person (or their last lover) has been. The cemeteries are filled with the bodies of those who thought it was safe to be promiscuous!

You can still contract diseases. If the escort has HIV & a sore or cut in their mouth, you can get it also. I suggest avoiding sexual contact with strangers.

People have herpes in their mouths, Herpes Type 1. And they may have any number of other diseases, depending on where their mouth has been, if you get my drift.
