Goldfish will pretty much eat anything.
If you do not use pesticides, you can try them.
The best 'wild caught' food I give my Betta's is mosquito larva.
That's what blood worms really are (read your fish food label)
Clean clear water left outside, a fine net to get the larva, feed as much as your fish will eat in 5 minutes. Don't leave any alive in there or you will get mosquito's in your home!
You can freeze them, stock up for winter!

As has been explained by others, bettas eat carnivores. Goldfish are omnivores. It just doesn't work. You're betta will not be getting enough nutrients, and can get sick. Personally, I would advise getting pellets over flakes. Pellets are easier to feed, cleaner, and more nutritious. When you do buy betta food, look to make sure the first ingredient is some form of meat (shrimp meal, fish meal, shrimp, fish, etc). I'd advise going and getting some now, seeing as they aren't expensive, and can pretty much last a fish's lifetime. BTW, it's advised to feed your betta 2-3 soaked pellets twice a day. Make sure you soak them before feeding, because when fed dry, they expand in the stomach and will constipate or make your fish sick.

As long as they are non-poisonous (spiders), or don't have stingers, and don't bite (some ants), thats fine. The goldfish will definitely eat them. Make sure the insects have not been exposed to pesticides such as spray around baseboards and the like.
Only feed the betta very small insects like tiny ants, flies, silverfish, etc.... he may or not eat them. In the wild, they live mainly on mosquito larvae (bloodworms). Keep that in mind when determining the correct size to feed.

Both will want to eat it. I don't think most of those will even fit in a betas mouth. and sometimes a beta will just attack it until it falls to the bottom of there bowl, then it just makes the water all messy. trust me i tried. They like blood worms enough. But if you would like a kick butt fish that will eat anything, Oscars.
Another way cool, way smaller, and way prettier fish that will attually shoot a fly out of the air to kill it, Gouramis. Look up gouramis, they are cool friggin fish, I've had two, and they followed my finger and lived through so much stuff I put them through, they're cool.

I've tried to feed my betta various bugs - he might grab small ants (the little light brown ones) in his mouth, but he always spits them out then gives me a nasty look, like I was trying to trick him or something.

no,i would'nt/just because you may not have sprayed(pesticides ect)@you'r place, you never know what they are carrying around from else where(that may harm fish)
It really is best to get live foods from the aquarium as it's raised especially for the purpose of food&is definatly free from toxins of any kind.
