You certainly can.

I've seen more than one malicious SOB plant a bad link in an answer here. That's why it's a good idea to have McAfee's Site Advisor installed so it can red-flag the majority of the bad sites before you do anything on them.

As soon as you connect to the Internet, your computer is vulnerable. I'm sure that Yahoo is doing their best to protect their system but they are just as vulnerable as you are. They are just monitoring more actively thus reducing the number of attacks.
There's no such thing as 100% effective Virus Protection. Until Yahoo creates one, they are bound to get some crapware once in a while. Once you connect to their service/server, your chances are the same.

Yes. Some viruses can be transmitted through pictures. So if you have an unpatched system and you view a picture on a different site through YA, then there you go. Likewise there are viruses that can be transmitted through pdfs, javascript, flash, and so on if you are not up on security updates.

I also use mcafee site advisor, it's a good guard against spam sites and malware sites.

First, why would you want virus.

Second no. Yahoo is a respectable company and website. They won't use malwares to earn money or stuff, unless you click on links that people provide that might lead to virus sites.
