Well "improper position" means you were trying to make a turn from an illegal lane, huh? You are facing 20 days in jail with water and bread only. Kidding you. Call the court clerk and give them your ticket number and ask how much the fine will be. Normally those tickets have a "set amount". The only way "its up to the judge" is if there are other circumstances surrounding the violation. Then the judge determines the fine. Best think to do is get the amount of the fine, get a money order and pay the fine and face a huge increase on your auto insurance rate next year. Otherwise you're still going to pay the fine plus court costs and maybe the judge will let you take defensive driving which is another $60 bucks. The only advantage to taking the defensive driving course is your driver's record will not "post" this violation and maybe your auto insurance will not go up but you have to keep a clean record for 3 years.

Cost depends on the state and the city. You may be able to get out of it by taking a Defensive Driving course.
Improper position probably means that you turned right from the middle or left hand lane instead of from the right or you turned from the right lane into the middle or left lane instead of turning into the nearest lane.

All depends on how much your city or county imposes on a ticket. Your car insurance may very well go up too. They will more than likely be notified too. You can call the police station and find out how much it will be (surprised it doesn't show on the ticket actually). You can go to court on your selected day though and try to plead it and see if you can get it lowered. Good luck!
