Lol. Perhaps it's false hope.
Either way, it's probably for the same reason we bang or press harder on other things when they aren't working, like the other person said.

human nature ..lol ... when ever i play my bros dumb games and i lose i bang on the keyboard or yell a bunch of insults at the absent maker of the game ... it's kind of fun to yell... cause usually it's just me and my bro and he's used to me yelling ...lol ... but yeah we sort of think that even thought the batteries are dead we can still get it to work just by pressing harder ...

same with slamming the keys on the keyboard harder when they aren't working..
and banging things in an attempt to get them to work, haha
