Question 1
x + y = 36
x - y = 24

2x = 60
x = 30

30 + y = 36
y = 6

x = 30 , y = 6

Question 2
x + y = 104
x = 2y - 1

x + y = 104
x - 2y = - 1

3y = 105
y = 35

x + 35 = 104
x = 69

x = 69 , y = 35

permit between the numbers be x. Then, because of the fact the sum of the numbers is 36, the different is 36 - x. the version is: x - (36 - x) = 12 x - 36 + x = 12 2x - 36 = 12 upload 36: 2x = 40 8 x = 24. The numbers are for this reason 24 and (36 - 24) = 12.

let x and y be the two numbers.
the sum is the answer when you add. the difference is the answer when you subtract.
x+y= 36
x-y=24 Solve this system by addition
2x= 60
x=30
substitute x into one of the original equations to get y
30 + y=36
y= 6

#2. x+y=104
x= 2y-1 solve by substitution
Put 2y-1 into the top equation for x
2y-1 +y=104
3y=105
y= 35
x=69

"the sum of two numbers in 36":
x+y = 36

"their difference is 24":
x-y = 24

add the equations together to eliminate the y terms:
x+y = 36
x-y = 24
------------
2x = 60

so x = 30 and y = 6

====================

"the sum of two numbers is 104":
x+y = 104

"the larger number is 1 less then twice the smaller":
x = 2y - 1

x = 104 - y
x = 2y - 1

104 - y = 2y - 1
3y = 105
y = 35
x = 69

X + Y = 36
X - Y = 24

so 2X = 60, X=30, and thus Y=6.

X+Y=104, let X be larger number
X=2Y-1

so 2Y-1+Y=104, or 3Y=105, so
Y=35 and X=69

let F = first number
S = second number

Their sum is 36, or

a) F + S = 36.

Their difference is 24, or

b) F-S = 24.

You have two equations in two unknowns, viz:

a) F + S = 36
b) F - S = 24. add
----------------------------
2F = 60
F = 30, or first number is 30.

Subs in either equation, say a)
a) F + S = 36 becomes
30 + S = 36 or
S = 6, or second # is 6.

Do the rest.

A + B = 36
A - B = 24

So 2A = 60 or

A = 40, B = 6

X + Y = 104
X = 2Y - 1

So Y = 35, X = 69
