So I applied for a local police officer position... well I passed the initial oral interview, the medical screening, the agilty test and during the agility test we got fitted for uniforms. Well the last step was an interview with the Police Chief.. well it was about 10 minutes long, the Chief spoke about the benefits, rookie school, what he expects from us, and also 4-5 people out of about 14 won't be hired. He said he would call me by Saturday and let me know if I get a job offer.. After the interview we were sent back across the street where we were "fitted" for uniforms again, and also guys were calling us new recruits..

However, if we don't officially have the job yet, why were we being fitted for uniforms? And making it all the way to the Chief's interview? Do I have a shot at this or no?

"4-5 people out of about 14 won't be hired."

There's your answer. Seems they've "winnowed down" their applicants, but still have more people than they have empty slots. My guess is that school starts soon, so they're getting the measurement for all your uniforms so that the lucky 9 or 10 won't have to come back to be fitted.

I would bet that what he meant was "on average, 4-5 people who start training either drop out, or fail out".

So, it sounds like you get to go rookie school, give it your best shot!

Many sales managers say things like, "80% of the people are no longer here in a year". Translates to only 20% of sales people are good enough to stay longer, the rest starve out.

Good luck
