It was necessary when the country was founded.The electoral collage would meet in the capitol and cast there votes there was not mass communication. The way it works is still like today one electorate vote per so many people. That is why states have different points in an election. Today it should be done away with.

The people get to vote for the candidate they think will best serve the people in a manner that is best for the country.
