It's called a speculum and it just holds you open so the doctor can do what they need to down there. It will not rip you open, virgin or not...it will be cold and a little uncomfortable, especially if you are tense, but that's it.

First of all, the device used in this kind of exam is called a speculum, and NO, it does NOT rip anyone open or tear tissue !!!! Nor do speculums affect virginity or the presence or abscence of a hymen in any way. Another point to remember is that nowadays, most speculums are made from plastic, not metal, and most are disposable.
I will give you some hints which may help you be less freaked out and nervous about this. Since it's obvious from your question that you have never had a pelvic exam, you need to make a pre-exam visit to you doctor's office. While you are there, ask the doctor to explain the exam procedure to you from begining to end, in language that you can understand easily. Ask questions about things you are not sure of, and use this visit to get your facts straight about what to expect. Try to remember that the only stupid question is the one you didn't ask. Most doctors will gladly take the time to explain things, especially if you tell him or her that this is your first exam and you are a bit nervous about it. Ask the doctor if you can look at a speculum, since that is what will be used, and take your time when you do. Ask the doctor to show you how it works ( he or she can do this without you being in an actual exam situation) and again, ask questions if you are not sure about things. Doctors are normally very good when a person is new to a procedure, and will do everything possible to make patients feel comfortable and at ease.
Another thing to ask about during your pre-exam visit is whether or not the doctor will permit you to have a support person present, such as your mom, aunt, grandma, or a close friend, during your exam. Many doctors will allow and tolerate this, because they recognize that patients are often much calmer and less nervous if they are with a loved one during exams and medical procedures. Find out if this is the case with your doctor before exam day.
As far as the actual exam itself goes, it's important to keep a few things in mind. One is that exams of this type are usually very short- most are over with in 5 minutes or less. Another thing to remember, pehaps the most important, is to relax, and remember to breathe when the speculum is inserted. If you hold your breath or are tense, you will tense your muscles, and this will make the exam more likely to hurt. When your feet are in the stirrups, DON'T try to hold your legs together, or to arch your back, because you will only tire yourself quickly, and this may also cause you an injury if you do it long enough. One last thing- ask to have the speculum warmed to body temperature prior to the exam. The doctor or nurse can run it under a stream of warm water, which will make you much more comfortable.
One other note: make sure you schedule your pelvic exam for a day which falls about 2 weeks AFTER your period. The reason for this is because it is very difficult for the doctor to see anything when you are having your period, and it can be a mess for you as well.
Good luck, and remember to relax. You will not get ripped open- that is nonsense, and I have no idea where you got an idea like that one from.

It's called a speculum. And yes they will. You won't just rip open. You shouldn't be so scared. I promise it'll be ok. The Gyno is there to make sure everything is going ok. He/She is only trying to make sure you are healthy.
Are you positive you still have your hymen? Women break their own all the time. They can do it while putting in a tampon, if they've had trauma to that area through a wreck or even horse back riding, and masturbation. Some women aren't born with a hymen even.
They won't push through it. You still have an opening even though your hymen is there. Your hymen will just stretch. It might break, but that'll be ok because you'll still be a virgin.
Good Luck. And trust your Gynecologist.

No, it won't rip you open. Most gynos are very gentle, especially if it's your first time going or are a virgin. Don't be afraid to tell him/her your fears.
My first time going I was so nervous I cried before and then after I ended up putting my sweater on inside out and backwards. The kind nurses pulled me aside and let me know before I got to the waiting room. =) It's no big deal and isn't painful, aside from MAYBE a tiny pinching feeling that lasts about a second.
The hymen may stretch or it might break. Either way, it'll be that pinching feeling I mentioned earlier. You might bleed a little, but again, it's all normal. Talk with your doctor.
Good luck!

It won't rip you open.
Keep in mind though, you may not even have a hymen. Some dissolve naturally and some girls never have one to being with (so don't freak out if you don't bleed or anything on your first time having sex and think the doctor messed up lol)
You'll be fine.

no that isn't true it doesn't "rip you" yes it can be painful but not like killer pain just take a deep breath and remember it will be over in a few mins. trust me no woman likes going there...i would say go to the Dr. and have your mom hold your hand...I'm almost 20 and been there a million times and my mom still holds my hand when i go its no big deal
and if you want to ask the Dr. some privet question just tell the Dr. you want to speak w/ him or her alone
and another tip seeing a male Dr. isn't that bad i was so scared up til about a month ago now its no big deal i would rather see a male then a female
good luck!

you wont 'rip' open, lmao.. and you usually wouldn't have to have a pap smear if you are not sexually active...
IF you are going for an exam and are a virgin, tell them that you are and they should be very gentle with you , telling you everything they are going to do. And it's not comfortable just to let you know, whether or not you are a virgin. BUT it needs to be done. Remember to stay as relaxed as possible... the more tense you are, the more uncomfortable it will be.
Good luck, Hun. You'll be OK.

If you ripped right open, you wouldn't come out of there alive. No, it's not true. They insert a speculum (metal clap like thing), and it's not sore. It might be a little uncomfortable, but definitely not sore.

It shouldn't tear your hymen but the examination itself is embarrassing. I had to undergo them when I was having my daughters and I never got over the discomfort. What bothered me the most was how cold the devices felt as they were going in.
