the more i think about it...the more similar these two players are. both extremely athletic, good not great shooters. adequate defenders when need be. quiet leaders who led by examples. both were great ambassadors of the league. the difference was the league was different when they were both in it.
dr j was the face of the league aba and nba before jordan and during the first few years of the bird, magic era.
clyde regardless of what he could do was ALWAYS going to be 2nd fiddle to michael as far as SG's go.
if u switched the two and put clyde in the mid/late 70's-early/mid 80's...maybe he wouldve been the torch carrier of the league...and if dr j was in clyde's shoes during the mid/late80's-90's he would also be 2nd fiddle to michael.
too close of a match-up to call...

You have to go with Dr. J. Clye "The Glide" Drexler was a great player no doubt, but Dr. J changed the game, and he and the ABA are actually what saved the NBA. It probably wouldn't even be around, as the NBA was in a time where they were "boring" and just not popular. The ABA was all about highflying and dunking, excitement. The same reason that teams like the Suns are popular today.

Julius "Dr. J", aka "The Whirling Dervish", aka "Moses Guthrie", aka "THE REAL AIR" Erving.
vs.
Clyde "Phi Slama Jamma","THA GLYDE" Drexler
Julius Would eat Clyde Drexler up in both their primes. Clyde definately had more hoops, but Julius was the better all around player. Plus Dr. J with the AFRO in his day was the Shizzle!

clyde drexler. i know that everyone will probably say dr. j but let me plead my case for clyde the glyde drexler! in his prime when he was with the portland trailblazers he was probably one of the top 5 players in the game. #2 If he would have had a legitmate center he would have won more championships then everyone would have been higher on him dr j had better teammates then clyde did that is why everybody likes dr j more not because of his skills on the basketball court!

What a pair of outstanding players. However, at their peak Julius Erving wins. He had those long arms and it seemed like he could float through the air on his way to the hoop.

Drexler was amazing. Actually, they were both amazing, but I think Clyde was better. Didn't he average a triple double his entire career or something?
