1. Tom Johnson and Doug Harvey - between them they dominated the Norris Trophy (winning 7 in a row)
2. Allan Stanley and Tim Horton
- no Norris Trophies but they help guide the Leafs to 4 Stanley Cups in 7 years
3. Larry Robinson and Rod Langway
- this was as good a defence pairing as any in the NHL from 1978-79 through 1981-82
4. Charlie Huddy/Randy Gregg and Paul Coffey
- somebody had to mind the fort when Coffey went on offense and Huddy and Gregg played the part extremely well.
5. Bill White and Pat Stapleton
- the last defence pair where both players made the post-season all-star team (1971-72)

Stats don't really justify a good pairing. There have been many good pairings, and it is hard to pick the best because each era has been a little different.
Since 1981(D.O.B.) I can't even select one, but here a few that I liked
Stevens and Rafalski
Chelios and Suter
McGinnis and Pronger
Bourque and Sweeney
Iafrate and the Balding Mullet

What was the greatest defensive pairing? Hm, not sure of all-time but Mark Howe and Brad McCrimmon were great as a pair. I think they were a cumulative +169 in 85/6. Of course, Orr and Dallas Smith but that was more Orr than Smith. Then there's the Mtl troika of Serge Savard, Guy Lapointe and Larry Robinson. Can't recall whom was paired with whom though.

wow in two question phemongoalie34 has managed to become an even worse answerer then me, Bourque was great but not greatest ever . that goes to his predecessor Orr.
Sorry can only give my favorite as there is more years of pairings i havent seen then that i have but i will back it up.
when paired together lindstrom and konstantinov. you had a future Norris in lindstrom, and one of the most feared in vlad. you had the best positional d man in resent history and a awesome physical. what if they could have been together couple more years. dam car accident, granted they also seem to be pair separately quite a bit too.
