Iron sulfide is a very common mineral, the most common of the sulfides, and is found commonly in hydrothermal areas, in sedimentary rocks, in coal beds, in quartz veins, and a replacement mineral n fossilization.

I've seen particularly nice specimens come from Spain and Brazil.

oddly, there are wonderful little pyrite chunks embedded in the road I live on. I'd like to know how they got there too!!

it is actually found in every environment
pyrite was the first sulfuric acid... not that it matters
