My daughter is a freshman and is taking Algebra 1. She took it last year and had some problems, but understood it by the end of the course. I made her take it again this year but is very bored in class because she knows everything already. Should I try to get her into geometry for the rest of the school year or hire a tutor for geometry this year?

you don't need to know much algebra to understand geometry... taking advanced algebra is another story

switching her into geometry at this late date is probably not advisable, in my opinion. Why? Because geometry is cumulative and if she enters geometry and has already missed months and months of it, she'll be overwelmed

I'm not sure why you made your daughter retake Algebra 1 if she understood it by the end of the course. Of course she's bored; she has to sit through the same stuff again and she isn't learning anything.

Your daughter's in high school and it's time you included her in your decisions about her education instead of making those decisions for her. Ask her if she would like to try geometry this year and whether she is open to tutoring if she can't enroll in the geometry class. If it isn't too late, maybe she can have short-term tutoring until she catches up with the rest of the geometry class. If the algebra class is doing nothing for her, maybe she can drop it and take a study period to do homework or read or take another useful class.

Personally, I don't think you can justify forcing her to give up her free time so she can sit down with a geometry tutor AND stay in the algebra class when it sounds like it's your fault she's in this position in the first place. If she were my kid, I would apologize to her for making her retake a class she understands and promise to make it up for her in some way.

It's too late to get her into geometry. They will already have learned things necessary for comprehension, and she will be behind the rest of the year. Frankly, you blew it, and your daughter will be bored. Them's the breaks. She might consider taking a non-math class, as she is wasting her time, but she'll have to wait until next year to start a more advanced math course. Talk it over with the guidance counselor for more information.

Question: did you discuss any of this with her teachers and guidance counselor before you arbitrarily decided to make her take it again? It sounds like you are not opening the lines of communication between you and the school. That is not a good thing. I'd work on that.
