For E.E. Cummings, I only know of "Anyone lived in a pretty how town," and for T.S. Eliot hands down my favorite so far is "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock". Anyone have any recommendations on poems? From these or other poets I haven't heard of yet?

hi ggm. i too have heard the mermaids singing each to each. Prufrock is the only thing of Eliot's i really liked. You can maybe find the Faber paperback of his poetry in a good used book store.... if there's one near you. E.E. Cummings has always been a favourite of mine, though i don't have any of his books. my favourite modern poet is Ezra Pound. do you know him? not the Cantos, but the earlier works. also William Carlos Williams. they are both available in New Directions paperbacks. oh yeh, Gary Snyder, Kenneth Patchen.

For T.S. Eliot, here's a site with 25 of his poems--just click on a title (the first site listed below; lots of other poets there, too)

You probably know Eliot wrote the poems that comprise the text of the musical CATS (he would have hated the musical, but that's another story!). I like "Prufrock," too, but it took years for "The Wasteland" to grow on me, and now I consider it his deepest work.

e.e. cummings (he didn't want capitals used in his name, which has become a copycat affectation for lots of young readers) is also all over the web. Here are some of his poems at the second site listed below. cummings' poems sound wonderful read aloud. We call that "ear candy" now, and he was really a master of it. His poetry is not as deep and wide a river as Eliot's, but we all like a perky brook now and then.

Happy reading!

These sites will give you a few more Cummings poems. You can also find his books at most libraries and bookstores.

(The answer below is incorrect on one point. It's a common misconception that Cummings didn't want his name capitalized. In fact, he disliked the lower-case rendition of his name. In his poems, he often lower cased words that are usually capitalized, such as "i," but he did not lower case his own name.)
