this is what happened. i was leaving work (home depot) & i saw some candy corn pumpkins on the ground, so i picked about 10 up and thinking it would be funny to place them all around a coworkers (Bill) car since he wasnt leaving til later.the next wk i came to wrk all my coworker friends told me that Bill was furious & wanted to know who did it he talkd to my boss and accused me of doing it but my boss did nothing. Bill never asked me if i did. A wk later the store manager brings me to his ofice and asks me to write a statement because Bill complained saying i did it. i of course denied doing it and wrote that if i had found any new info id give them it. store manager said they have some video footage nd there would be an investigation and he sent me home hr into my shift and told me that i'd be called when the investigation was over for . can i get fired when i was off the clock and it was not vandalism they were placed not broken or smushed. yeah this is as dumb as it sounds but true

I don't think you can get fired for doing that. But it was definitely a stupid thing to do. If they had melted they could have damaged the paint and then you'd have a lawsuit on your hands.

In this Super PC World of ours, yes, you can be fired and what you did CAN be called Vandalism...
You wounded Bill's inner child and reality has no real bearing into what can happen to you...
You need to contact corporate and ask what the policy on a situation like this would be…
They might tell you that because you denied it, they can fire you if they look at the security footage…
It also depends on what state you work in...
If you live in Illinois, for example, they need a REAL reason to fire you...
But if you live in Arizona, a right to work state, then they need no reason at all...
I got fired in AZ because a FRIEND of mine filed a complaint about how the Assistant Manager at the store I worked at cussed out a customer, threw a smoothie at the window of a neighboring store, and took money from the register for personal snacks...
I'll say that again, I GOT FIRED FOR MY FRIEND FILEING A COMPLAINT.
They said that the friend wouldn’t have complained to corporate if I hadn’t told her about what was going on.
I hate to say it but your pretty screwed... and there isn't much you can do about it...
It's one of the worst parts of the "Real world".

You could potentially lose your job if the coworker is a protected class and the act is deemed somehow as harrassment.
Also, you could lose your job for falsifying company documents if they watch the video and see you do it after you said you didnt.
All of this depends on your company's policy.
In a nut shell, if you are in a non-minority class then you might lose some sleep - especially if the coworker Bill is (again) in a protected class.
My wife is an HR manager and this info is based on what she told me.
Dont do it again. =)

Yes, because you were on company property. That said, I don't see this as a reason to get fired. If they fire you without giving you a warning or a suspension first, I would file a complaint with the labor board. I would love to see HR match this to a reason for termination policy.

You did something on your companies property. Then you lied to your manager about it. Your co worker's reaction seems a bit over the top, especially if there was no damage. However, the die is set and if you are found to have lied to your manager, they will fire you for that.

When the boss talked to you, it was a test. He already pretty much knew you did it. They caught you in a lie, sorry.
