Well when I was growing up people would write Xmas as short hand way of writing out Christmas. It's just not as much to write so when sending a letter or Christmas Card people might sign the card happy Xmas. There was no meaning of disrespect or anything behind it. Now, some people think and feel that when you say or write Xmas it is being disrespectful of Christ because you take the Christ out of the word Christmas. Now some people say happy Xmas I guess as a way of making it either non-religious specific or do it as a way to actually show disrespect. There are still many who when writing it use Xmas, but many Christians have become upset about it and see it as rude. I myself do not have any real issue with someone writing Xmas, but when they say Xmas that pisses me off. That is usually just someone who wants to show disrespect for Christmas and what it stands for. I mean saying Christmas is no harder than saying Xmas. So that just shows lack of respect for peoples religion. Also when I was in elementary through high school we called it Christmas Break, not winter break. Now everyone has to be so politically correct that most all school systems and so on use the term winter break and not Christmas Break. I think that is being a little silly. I mean the whole reason we have off from before Christmas until January is due to Christmas, and that was the reason that break began. So I think it should still be called Christmas Break. I really don't mind people calling it winter break, but the only reason most people call it that is because Christmas is a Christian holiday. They don't want to acknowledge the fact that the real reason we have that time off is for Christmas. That's what I get upset about. All the people who use Winter Break do so, because they are being politically correct and that I have an issue with. Anyway, that is why I think many people say Xmas now. I hope you have a wonderful and happy Christmas and a good New Year!! =)

It bugs the crap out of me when people write xmas. The day is about Christ. I put Christmas... even if I have to write it very tiny to fit in a small space. I personally don't feel it should be abbreviated.

Who says "xmas"? I see it written, but never hear people speak it.
When I am feeling lazy, and depending on the audience, I will use xmas instead of Christmas.

At one time, it was considered more respectful to use the x, instead of writing out Christ, just as orthodox Jews will not write out God, but use G-d. At present it is generally just an abbreviation.

It's shorter. Christ has six letters and is tedious to write. Seriously, though, X was a Greek symbol for the cross and Christ.
