My understanding is that this idea was based on two things. First that the Mayan calendar ended on that date and second, that the sun and earth will align with the center of the galaxy.
Only one minor problem. Neither of those turns out to be true. And there is no reason at all to believe that either of them would have any effect on us, even if they were true. Now this thing will gain momentum as the Planet X and Nibiru people and the Nostradamus fans piggyback their equally bogus end-world predictions on this stupid claim. They will all turn out to be wrong. Again.
But there is a lesson to be learned here. There are three networks on television which have become famous for airing any absurd documentary that anyone makes. They have no ethical standards. They hide behind the claim that it's only entertainment. They are Fox, the History Channel, and the Discovery Channel. Occasionally they will stumble upon something worth watching, but many times you will be getting information about as reliable as supermarket tabloids.

NO ONE! There is no theory, logical explanation or proof that the world will end in 2012.
You've been reading too many fiction stories. Grow up.

To continue my Sagan quoting streak:
"I worry that, especially as the Millennium edges nearer, pseudo-science and superstition will seem year by year more tempting, the siren song of unreason more sonorous and attractive. Where have we heard it before? Whenever our ethnic or national prejudices are aroused, in times of scarcity, during challenges to national self-esteem or nerve, when we agonize about our diminished cosmic place and purpose, or when fanaticism is bubbling up around us-then, habits of thought familiar from ages past reach for the controls. The candle flame gutters. Its little pool of light trembles. Darkness gathers. The demons begin to stir."

The earth is supposed to be hiiighly succeptible to an axis shift when it gets aligned with the center of the universe and with the black hole in dec/2012. This could cause a wipeout of civilizations due to the environmental consequences as a result of the axis shift. Scary to think about. 4 years away, ooooh

The only people who believe it are those lacking *any* scientific knowledge and who are naive and gullible.
