Here's the equation, where x is the unknown number
-6 + x/2 = 5
I really don't know what you want but if you solve for x...
-6 + x/2 + 6= 5 +6
x/2 = 11
x =22
The unknown number is 22

Can you write the equation out in numbers? I don't know if there should be parenthesis around -6 and x or if I should solve this using pemdas.

I guess I could do it both ways:

Without parenthesis-
-6 + x /2 = 5
x/2 = 5 + 6
x/2 = 11
x = 22

With parenthesis-
(-6 + x)/2 = 5
-6/2 + x/2 = 5
-3 + x/2 = 5
x/2 = 5 +3
x/2 = 8
x = 16

But now that I think of it, I might have taken the x out of division form wrong. Sorry to be so confusing, but maybe I helped a little.

Ambigous.

This could be -6 + x/2 = 5
x/2 = 11
x = 22

Or it could mean (-6 + x)/2 = 5
-6 + x = 10
x = 16

Go with the first one if it's from a math book

-6+X/2=5 add six to both sides
+6 +6

X/2=11 mult. 2 to both sides to get X alone
x2 x2

X=11 then your left with X=22

add 6 to each side

which would be

then multiply each side by two

x=22
