Is this a good idea to let them build the drain partly on my property. I am afraid the water will drain and sit in front of my home. Is this true?? Thanks.

To detail more, I live on the corner lot. I have seen water drain in the street in front of my home. I am wondering if this drain will add to it.

The idea of french drains is to help remove water from areas that could cause damage to foundations. Since we don't have an idea what your landscape conditions are, you may require your neighbor to assure water from the installed drain does not stand in your yard or otherwise cause harm to your property. That said, the drain may be of benefit to you also. If it were my property, I most likely wouldn't object to the drain if he will agree to fix any future problems connected to his installing the drain.

If your house is on a hill and near a slope, then it must be on the top of the hill. If this is right, the water in the drain would have to run uphill to affect you, so there is no problem.

Whether I understood you correctly or not, the drain must have an outlet somewhere. Where will that be? If the drain is properly designed and constructed, it will discharge to either a surface drainageway or some type of underground structure, a drywell or something equivalent. Again, there is no problem. He can't just dig a short trench and fill it with stones. It MUST have an outlet.

I would ask him to show you how he wants to put it in. I'm sure you know that these types of drains are usually just a ditch filled with gravel. There purpose is to divert water away from his house. So, if he wants to build the french drain where the flow will end up near your house, I wouldn't let him do it. However, if he wants to run it toward the street i don't think it would hurt your property

I don't think it's a good idea for your neighbor to build anything on your property. There has to be a better way.
