Thanksgiving, Fourth of July

2007-12-04 14:03:28 · answer #1 · answered by Anonymous · 0 0

Thanksgiving Day: a national holiday, set by Abraham Lincoln, and everyone eats the same food...sharing a common cultural bond. Whether you are in Texas or Vermont, you are eating turkey that day. It is a common cultural experience that binds all the people.
You need some commanality....things we all share together.
Fourth of July Fireworks is another one. What kind of American doesn't like fireworks on the Fourth of July? It would be unheard of. Man, if it is Independence Day you have to light something off!
Labor Day picnics. It is the last weekend of summer, the official end of summer. Everybody has a picnic....and celebrates a day of rest to give thanks to the organized labor movement and the American working class. What kind of American doesn't eat hot dogs on Labor Day? Unheard of.
Santa Claus comes to the house on Christmas Eve. Okay, sure, it's a made up story...there really isn't a fat guy with a white beard in a red suit who comes down the chimney...but we Americans created that image, as well as all the songs that go with it, to give little kids something fun in their lives to look forward to, to give them a sense of magic. Santa Claus is known in different ways around the world, but the Americans have turned him into an industry!

Friday night high school football is a big event in a lot of communities. I know it is where I live. The whole community shows up to support their team.

The Superbowl is likewise important, more important than the World Series, I think. Even if you don't watch football all year, most people tune in to see the championship game on Superbowl Sunday.

All I can think is Independance Day. It's our own special day that no one else shares. I don't like the thought of where thanksgiving comes from, cuz we took others freedoms back then.

Freedom- It gives the people the right to say "I am free". They have the right to live comfortably with the constitution to protect those rights.
