This should be interesting. I'm not sure there are many folks who know too much about Wilt, or Russell, or even Jabbar. But, i'm hoping some know about the likes of Olajuwon, Robinson, and Ewing. So which 5 should be on the all time list? Don't forget the likes of Shaq.....

1. Olajuwon
2. Russell
3. The Admiral
4. Kareem
5. Dikembe Mutumbo
5. Wilt Chamberlain

.... 256. Shaq

That's just my opinion.
But seriously, if anybody thinks Hakeem wasn't amazing, they need to watch some footage of that guy playing. He's so good!

Wilt, Russell, Kareem, Shaq are the top 4 best and most dominant of centers ever. Between Wilt,Russell and Kareem, no one else is really close. Shaq was a dominant player against a much weaker overall caliber of centers.

Olajuwon is a possible choice for #5...Ewing and Robinson are nowhere close.

I'm counting Tim Duncan as a forward... He's the best power forward ever to play the game, but as a center he's nowhere near the top 10, let alone the top 5.

Moses Malone would probably be a better choice for #5 than Olajuwon.

Shaq is the only active center who's in the top 10 of all time, no one else who's active today is anywhere near that.

Had Bill Walton been healthy throughout his career, he would defintiely be the 5th man in the group along with Wilt, Rusell, Kareem and Shaq.

I would be inclined to put Moses Malone in the #5 spot.

So the answer is Wilt, Russell, Kareem, Shaq and Moses Malone. Olajuwon is #6 (a lot of people will disagree, because they've seen the video of Olajuwon schooling David Robinson about 500 times on Sportscenter...but Moses Malone was a better and more dominating center than Olajuwon...but not by a lot).

Malone won 3 MVP awards, competing against guys like Kareem, Bird, Magic, Walton etc.

balla, you have GOT to be kidding us about Marcus Camby! The question was, "the five best centers of all time"

As a Houston fan, I must say whoever put Yao in as number 5 is crazy!! He's not even my top 10.

1) Kareem Abdul Jabbar, nothing missing in his game including longevity.
2) Bill Russell, he was the one guy who could hold chamberlain in the era.
3) Chamberlain, monster scorer, but also monster sized in relation to the rest of the league.
4) Olajuwon, just above Shaq for defensive reasons.
5) O'Neal, great center who has played weaker centers.

Wilt Chamberlain
Bill Russell
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
Hakeem Olajuwon
Shaquille O'Neal

I think you could make an argument that Tim Duncan is a PF-C and if so, I'd include him on the list over Shaq. But technically I think he's considered only a power forward.

Ewing doesn't make the cut because he never won a ring, and Shaq gets the nod over Robinson because of his 3 dynasty rings to Robinson's 1.

i'm picking guys who i believe, if they played today, would dominate the league. so don't expect mikan to be on my list.

1. kareem abdul jabbar - the skyhook will be as unstoppable today as it was in his heyday.
2. wilt chamberlain - during part of wilt's career, the league didn't allow dunks so he wouldn't be able to dominate as much. that says alot about his greatness.
3. hakeem olajuwon - best combination of size, strength, quickness and skill
4. bill russell - his defensive instincts are unparalleled
5. shaquille o'niel (prime) - has that rare combintion of strength, size and quickness

runners up rounding the top 10:
6. david robinson 7. moses malone 8. bill walton 9. robert parish 10. patrick ewing.

duncan is not a center. he's a power forward. played power forward his whole career. in fact he's the greatest power forward of all time.
