If you are beginners, I would suggest Boreal (cheap, not a big mountain), Diamond Peak (a great bunny hill to learn on), or Alpine Meadows (endless Green/easy and Blue/intermediate runs and great lifts). There is also Mt. Rose closest to Reno that has good mid week discounts and a snow escalator to ride to the top of the learning hill.

Heavenly is nice, but it is expensive and there are mostly more difficult intermediate and advanced runs.

Good Luck

I'm with Mikey - the best resort isn't on your list: Kirkwood. Its about 30 mins south of Lake Tahoe and is worth the drive. Smaller crowds, the slopes are more challenging, and the lift lines aren't normally too bad. Otherwise, Squaw Valley is always a must if you've never been there. Heavenly is also a decent mountain, just very crowded. On the upside, it has one of the best views you'll find at any resort in the Tahoe region.

Homewood, about 15 miles south of Squaw Valley is a great place. It never gets crowded there, so there is always room for beginners, and they have some nice easy trails to start on, plus instructors to help. Also Squaw Valley is nice. They are running a deal for their snowboarding classes $25 gets you an instructor, equiptment, and beginner lift ticket. Both of these resorts are on the west side of the lake just south of Truckee.

heavenly is a nice place. it is in south shore. It is more of a drive than resorts on the north shore. But heavenly offers a lot!
