Is suicide a sin, and is it "wrong" i ask. Well I say that different societies have different interpretations of what is "right" and wrong". The problem here is that most people that have answered are passing a moral judgment on the issue, condemning the person thinking of, or having committed suicide.
I don't believe that when a person commits suicide dies, they go straight to Hell, although I am open to the idea that whatever problems you were trying to escape from in life, could possibly also be faced in death too. To me, that's the criteria I would use to the extent of how "wrong" it might be, but I am being careful to avoid placing judgments here.
If you were to die out of a sense of completeness for instance, say that you felt that you had done all for this world that you could, and there really was nothing left for you but pain and suffering to remain here, then it would not be "wrong" in my opinion, but I would advise anyone considering that to see the whole picture before making such a decision; I know I certainly would not feel complete if there were lots of people out there caring for me, but if absolutely everyone I knew hated me, and were intent on making my life Hell, I am quite sure that God, as merciful as he is would understand why I chose to leave this world.
What I find interesting is how we consider suicide so sinful, akin to murder, yet smoking a cigarette for instance is something that is hardly mentioned as a sin; is that because it kills you slowly over time, rather than an instant death? Ultimately though I simply do not have enough information; I have not experienced death myself, so have little clue as to what goes on exactly on the Other Side, so can't say that I think it's wrong because God thinks it wrong; I certainly wouldn't claim to know the morality of the creator of the whole universe.
That said, I do believe that it is wise to consider all possible options you have carefully before you make any big decision like ending your life.
Ultimately though, I think though the taboo of not being able to speak up about suicidal thoughts and feelings does not do our society justice. I guess I see life as a lot more complex, and if people were able to talk about death a lot more freely, then a lot of suicidal people would feel less alone, as there would be a lot more people to talk to about their feelings without fear of being judged or condemned. Well those are my thoughts. Take care everyone.

Quite a bit of uptight, Bible-centric answers here. Maybe everyone thinks you're in danger of doing yourself in mate. Either that or it's good Christian's week!
While I shall purposely ignore the moral implications of suicide let me just say this and keep this simple: it's easy to make it good here, this life, this plane of existence. Why would anyone, including the idiots and cowards want to risk starting over(oh yes, the ride doesn't end at your death, believe what you will but do you want to take the risk?)? Your attitude determines, perhaps more than your beliefs what and how your life will turn out to be. So why not live it large, take the troubles head on and just keep going. Ideology alone WILL indeed get you through.
And this Waz guy, don't diss your own religion just because you're ignorant of its implications. And the idiots who say it depends on your religion are the worst.

Depends on what religion you believe in.
If you're thinking about committing suicide, please don't do so.
SUICIDE IS A PERMANENT SOLUTION TO A TEMPORARY PROBLEM.
Please read this if you're feeling suicidal: http://www.metanoia.org/suicide/
If you commit suicide, you're causing pain to the people who care about you.
"Family members, friends, teammates, neighbors, and sometimes even those who didn't know the teen well might experience feelings of grief, confusion, guilt — and the sense that if only they had done something differently, the suicide could have been prevented."
Suicide is a coping method. Suicide is when you've felt too much pain to 'cope normally.'
I think suicide is 'wrong' in that you're causing other people pain when you commit suicide. Even if you think that there's no one who cares about you, there probably is. Might not be obvious, but it's there. SOMEONE CARES ABOUT YOU AND DOESN'T WANT YOU TO DIE. (For example: ME! I don't want you to commit suicide.)
Personally, I don't think committing suicide is 'selfish' or 'cowardly' or 'idiotic.' People who say stuff like that just don't know what the hell the other person's going through when s/he is feeling suicidal. And it's extremely insensitive of someone to tell someone else s/he is 'stupid' for choosing suicide. If they're at the point where they're contemplating suicide, it won't make them feel better to hear that they're 'stupid.'

I don't think it is a question of sin(and I am a christian), I think it is a last ditch effort to get rid of pain. I don't think someone is a bad person who commits suicide but a person who checked out right before someone was there to help them.
I remember a friend who got pregnate as a teenager and thought about it because her family would never understand.
Now 20 yrs later she is happily married,in a good relationship with her family and that young man is her pride and joy.
Things change. Bad things ALWAY get better...I promise.

YES! DEFINITELY! If you are feeling like committing suicide is the only way out, get some help. Face your problems, don't be a coward! Killing yourself is not the answer. There are probably people out there much worse than you, and perfectly happy. So stop feeling sorry for yourself! All suicide will do is hurt your loved ones and prove you are a coward.

We all wonder about this area of our lives and beliefs...In most cases it is wrong.
A lot depends on WHY you are thinking about it. According to the bible, God is the one that created you and he (or disease) is the only one to kill you.
Thinking about suicide is not sin, acting on it is. there is not a YES vs NO answer in my opinion. I will say usually it is wrong.

In most religions it is considered the "greatest sin" and greatly frowned upon because of this, there is of course exceptions in certain religions (like Islam) that have different "rules".
Also most people who commit suicide have mental or had extreme emotional stress because committing suicide defies the first law of human instinct and that is self preservation.

whether or not suicide is a sin depends on what religion you are and what you believe. personally, i don't believe in sins (because i'm an Atheist.) but i do believe that it is wrong. in my opinion, the only thing a person could truly accomplish by committing suicide is hurting the people who care about them.

Yes. It hurts you, you family, friends, even if you think it won't affect anyone, your death will emotionally change all the people who have even just seen your face in the grocery store. It's a selfish thing to do, trying to get out of your pain at the expense of the ones around you. Suicidal people are psychologically one of the most narcissistic mental groups.
