Dilation and curettage.
It's a procedure to remove the products of pregnancy from the uterus either as an abortion method or as a means to remove it when there baby has died but not passed (called a missed miscarriage). It can also be used on non-pregnant women - it scrapes the lining of the uterus and sucks it out, so for example, if there is a retained placenta after birth that needs removal, etc.

Simply put, it means "Dilitation and Curettage".
This is performed after miscarriage, when all the uterine contents have not been completely expelled. The cervix is dilated with wheat look a little like crotchet hooks, then the uterus is scrapped clean. The same procedure can also be used to terminate early pregnancy.

D and C is a procedure to scrape and collect the tissue (endometrium) from inside the uterus. Dilatation ("D") is a widening of the cervix to allow instruments into the uterus. Curettage ("C") is the scraping of the contents of the uterus.
Uterine scraping (D and C) may be done to:
-Diagnose conditions using the tissue samples collected ( biopsies )
-Treat irregular or heavy bleeding
-Remove fetal or placental tissue -- used for some elective or therapeutic abortions and to remove any remaining tissue after a spontaneous abortion ( miscarriage )

D&C is short for dilation and curettage, as I recall. It's a medical procedure where the lining of the uterus is scraped out by a doctor. The purpose in using this procedure after miscarriage is to make sure that any remnants of the pregnancy are removed.

Dilatation and Curettage (D&C) is a procedure in which the uterine lining is sampled with a metal device called a curette in order to determine if there is an abnormality with the cells that line the uterus (endometrium). Most commonly, this surgery is done in order to help determine the cause of abnormal uterine bleeding. It can also be done to help determine the degree of abnormality of the endometrium in cases of cancer or pre-cancerous cells that are detected by an in-office biopsy. D&C is also used to evaluate post-menopausal women who have had abnormal cells appear on their pap smears.
