Many wanted to play in politics in order to grab power.

Playing politics generally means basing one's actions on personality or personal status rather than correct information or action. You can play politics at work, if instead of finding a way to do your job better, you start playing squash with the boss.

It means that you don't really mean what you say.

When politicians say that, they're accusing each other of lying to each other effectively (which they do).

You're just saying something to make somebody else look bad. Namely, your opponent.

Of course, politicians lie so much that we can't really tell when they actually mean something anymore - lol.
