I don't consider football players to be heroes. However, I think there is a "greater sense of loss", as you put it, when a football player is killed for two reasons. One, fans have a more personal relationship with the players. They watch them each week and usually know a little about the players' personal lives and personalities. With a soldier, you don't know anything about the person until after they have died.
Secondly, the death of any football player is almost completely unexpected. With a soldier, you know (as well as they do) that there is a serious risk they are going to be killed when they go into combat.
Plus, soldiers die in much greater numbers. In Desert Storm, when only a few soldiers were killed, they received much greater attention than the average soldier killed in the current war. When over 3000 soldiers are killed, individuals tend to get lost in the mix.

Great football player means having good attitude towards the game, having respect for the opposite players and playing good even if you don't got skills (or if you got skils). Kaka / Brazil / 2002- Pele / Brazil / 1957- 1971 Cafu / Brazil / 1990- 2006 George Best / N.Ireland / 1964 -1977 Bobby Charlton / England / 1958- 1970 Bobby Moore / England / 1962- 1973 Peter Shilton / England / 1970 -1990 Hakan Sukur / Turkey / 1992- (semi-retire) Diego Maradona / Argentina / 197- 1994 Paolo Maldini / Italy / 1988 -2004 Luigi Riva / Italy / 1965- 1974 Lothar Matthäus / Germany / 1980- 2000 Gerd Muller / Germany / 1966- 1974 Mohamed Al-Deayea / Saudi Arabia / 1990- 2006 (world's most capped player) Majed Abdullah / Saudi Arabia / 1977-1994 Thierry Henry / France / 1997- Lilian Thuram / France / 1994- 2008 (great tackler) Javier Zanetti / Argentina / 1994- (Semi-retire) Gabriel Batistuta / Argentina / 1991- 2002 to be a great player, you don't need to have ex- great football player father. This all player have came to this possition by their own work nand effort.

It is sad when anyone dies!
But the two should not be compared.
A soldier FIGHTS for country and freedom.
A football player PLAYS for team and a large paycheck.
This say's it all.
God Bless all the troops.

Hero of what? Maybe Taylor was a hero to some young fan. Both an athlete and a soldier choose their path. We need both.

i don't think it has much to do with heroes.
many soldiers die on a very regular basis, but it is rare for a football player to die. we become desensitized to death. it is much more shocking when someone dies that we don't expect to. that is why we mourn the death of children more than the death of the elderly.

Because our Values are messed up. WE worship our Entertainment "heros"- while the people who fight & die for us in the REAL World- are forgotten. :(

Well again I hate to put this so bluntly-who put their life in danger and who kills-is this right to kill? My God says Thou shall not kill so I can't call a killer a hero either-sorry and I do pray for them-the soldiers for they know not what they do
