Some of the best poets the United States has ever produced (there are plenty of good English-language poets from other countries) are Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, E.E. Cummings, Robert Frost, Richard Wilbur, Robert Francis, A.E. Stallings, and Rhina Espaillat. You can find their books in good libraries and bookstores, and lots of examples of their work online.
But you don't have to go with my favorites. You can start to discover your own favorites by checking out some zines that publish many excellent contemporary poets. Here are a few links to online journals:

Some of the poets you find in those zines will do more for you than others. You can then search online for more of their work and for information about any books they may have published. You've got some great reading ahead of you. Happy hunting.

My favourite poet is Dorothy Parker. Her poems are fun and witty. There is end rhyme in her poems, but it works for the kind of poetry she writes. Sylvia Plath is another good poet. Her poems are a lot darker than Parker's.

Walt Whitman is a great poet. His best poem is "Oh Captain, My Captain" it is a reference poem directed to Abraham Lincoln.
Emily Dickenson is a very famous American poet who has many great poems. my personal favorite is "I'll Tell You How the Sun Rose".

The only poet I like would be Shel Silverstien. He writes fantastic poems of which everyone in my family likes, including adults, despite many of his poems are for children.
