They did not have a choice in the matter. They held it back as long as they could. Bits and pieces were being leaked. If they did not, it would have hit the fan even worse than it has.
Take note at how neo-cons are simply parroting Bush's memo.
Do not forget, neo-cons would not even admit that Plame was a covert op until Fox News had to a year after the fact.

I always thought that being sane was similar to being pregnant. You either are or you are not. I'm not sure how the "entirely" fits in here. I would like to tell you that I think it indicates he's insane, but that wouldn't be the truth. The Bush administration has, since 911, operated successfully on the basis of inspiring fear. This premise contributed to the knee-jerk reaction of the congress in supporting and passing the "patriot act" and it has worked pretty well for them/him since then. Now he's caught in an embarassing situation. Today he explained that he had been told quite a few months ago that there was some new intel, but that it needed to be checked out for accuracy, and that he was only given this information several days ago. OK, so that means when the President is told that there is some new (meaning 'different') intel, he doesn't ask for at least a cursory overview? Who in the world will believe that! So now, as a politician is obligated to do, he tries to spin this around to make it sound like...yeah, that's what I've been sayin all along." It's pathetic and it's embarrassing to anyone with half a brain. However, I think the American public's unimaginable gullibility makes people like George Bush believe they can say anything and the people will believe it. So perhaps the better question is this: Are Americans in general not entirely sane?

Because the information has been knowledge in foreign papers for a long time. Not a big deal. Yet now as a media spin it is. I support Bush for taking a Press conference to speak out. Iran was, is, and will be a threat. The NIE was a warning. If we had such warnings prior to 9- 11 would we be bashing this President? I think not. I have read these for almost 8 mos.
The idea that Saddam had WMD and the same is similar read these for me please.

edit: the uranium enrichment and out sourcing is more of a problem due to sanctions the banks stopped the Iranian Revolutionary Guard and all the money they had to get the fix for the cocktail for weapons... The Saudis said they would go to Switzerland with them...Bush is 100 % correct they are a threat.

because the new NIE shows that bush was right all along.
That Iran did in fact have a nuclear weapons program, just as previous NIE's have stated.
And that Bush's policy of applying international pressure on Iran, did in fact, make Iran halt it's nuclear weapons program.
What I cannot understand, is now that we know Bush's policy has worked,
Why does the left want Bush to change his policy ?
International pressure is what made Iran halt it's program, so why back off international pressure now ?
Both Iran and North Korea started nuclear weapons development programs under the previous president.
Both have now halted nuclear weapons programs because of Bush's foreign policy towards thier country.
Isn't that a good thing ??
I see to many, who somehow think the new NIE is bad news.

No, the real question is how long has he known what this report contained. He's been beating the drums of war with Iran for months when he apparently already knew that Iran had halted their nuclear weapons program in 2003. Can we ever trust the Bush administration to be straight and honest with the American public, that's the real question?

The releasing of the report was intentional, but what was the intention?
Its probably to see how gullible the populace still is since they have been fed lies since 9/11. As an alternative to finding out that the populace isn't gullible anymore, then the U.S. won't attack Iran but instead let uncontrollable Israel attack Iran while the U.S. comes to Israel's aid.
The reaction to the report is being used to estimate how to populace will react to pre-planned decisions that will be executed.
Global reactions could also be examined to see who is truly our ally to the end and who isn't.

The story I heard on BBC was that it was some sort of a freedom of information thing. Didn't catch all the details.
Don`t think Bush would have wanted this to be made public, makes him look like a chump for keeping up the fear mongering when he knew months ago how full of sh!t he was.

I have got to agree with dudes first answer on this one just because a report says Iran halted its nuclear program doesn't mean they did not continue with building the rest of it. Once they get the engine 'enriched uranium" it will be easy to put the rest of the parts together.

The intelligence people advised the president to release the report since the last report was released and was used to formulate foreign policy. They didn't initially intend to release it.

It was actually Secretary Gates that put them out. Bush probably would put them out if they agreed with the position that the White House had which we all now know was either misinformed or blatantly ignored or possibly both. It was a huge slap in the face of not only Bush but especially Cheney who wanted us to bomb the heck out Iran already.
