You have to check with your insurance company. But I would think most major insurance companies would have maternity coverage.

When you are getting insurance from work, pregnancy is not considered a pre-existing condition. She should be covered from the first day that you got the insurance. Contact the insurance company to get particulars. For instance, is she required to go to certain hospitals within the network?

Generally, individual policies or policies with small companies are the ones where you don't know if you are covered or not. For instance, I got a job at a small company and during that first 2 weeks, I found out that maternity wasn't even covered! And it's LEGAL for small companies to drop that coverage! My individual policy did not cover pregnancy until you had the policy for 18 months (most are like that).

On top of all of that, some companies are self-insuring. This means that if you have a high risk pregnancy, you might not be covered because the hospital (often attached to the Children's hospital) isn't part of their preferred network.

Pregnancy is usually covered under a health insurance policy. Mine were covered under my husband's insurance, except for when he changed jobs in the middle of my pregnancy. He had to have a COBRA policy from his former employer until our daughter was born. After that, he switched to the other company's policy and we were covered from that point on.

Good luck, and congratulations on becoming a dad.

you are seriously needing to call the insurance company. Most companies will consider a pregnancy to be a pre existing condition which means they don't have to cover it usually for the first 6 months to a year after the policy has been started.

She'll have to talk to her HR department. Every company's insurance is different.
