While the exterior of the engines look much alike, there's major differences inside. In fact, there's little if anything identical. The 1000 is 1015cc, the wider bore 1100 is 1089cc. The 1100's have rubber mounted engines which by itself makes it better than the 1000. The 1100 makes a LOT more power and with the rubber mounting you can use high rpm without shaking your eyeballs loose. The shaft drive is rubber mounted at 3 points and is smoother than the 2 rubber points on the chain drive models. However, the chain drives are still quite smooth but not silky smooth like the shaft drive. The cam chain is roller on the 1000 and link plate in the 1100 and is quieter. The alternator puts out more power on the 1100, 240 watts compared to 180 watts on the 1000.

I replaced my KZ1000 shaft drive engine with the engine from a KZ1100 shaft. Not as easy as you'd think, but the 1100 engine made it into a completely different bike. The down side is that the engine is now so smooth and powerful that I go through rear tires more rapidly than before. Go for the 1100 and you can't go wrong. Oh, the Suzuki 750 will look nice in your rear view mirrors.
