Trying to stay alive.
Since mankind started forming governments for the right reasons, they have had to deal with people who wanted to rule over everyone.
Most people had freedom only so long as they didn't break a law or offend a church or political leader.
Unlike the U.S.,any freedoms granted by the government could also take away those freedoms.
However the freedoms of U.S. citizens is also being taken away in the name of "national security" and the war on terrorism. This can be seen in "The Patriot Act" and the wire tapping without a court order on U.S. citizens.
The Patriot Act allows police to search vehicles without a search warrant looking for "terrorist"suspects and persons of "suspicious" nature and weapons used by terrorists.
This is unconstitutional because the U.S. Constitution requires a search warrant specifically identifying the person to be searched or arrested and/or the property to be searched and what is being sought.
A warrant can only be authorized by a judge if the police can present enough evidence and probable cause to justify the search or arrest.
Basically it means that if the police search your house for cocaine and they find a million dollars, they cant take the million dollars because it was not listed on the search warrant, but since the patriot act and anti-drug laws have been changed the search warrant has just about been eliminated and because you have too much money in your house.you can be arrested as a drug lord even if you never had any dealing in illegal drugs ( plus you have to prove you are not a drug dealer because the law says you are guilty without a trial and you also have to sue to get the money and everything seized back).
The only exception is if a police officer actually sees you conduct a crime.

I am wondering if what haven't people endured for freedom is a more fitting question. They have suffered every atrocity known to man, all throughout history.
I can't even imagine the types of torture used to extract information from military personnel, in any country. This is just one example.
I am thinking total death of soul and sanity long before physical death, is what a lot of people lose.
