I prefer straight Science Fiction myself and Koontz is better known for his horror and suspense thrillers. In my opinion he is not sophisticated enough for me (but, I tend to be a bit of a brainaic; I understood well over 50% of Steven Hawking’s book).
Check out this Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dean_Koontz#Common_elements
For his common elements and see if you agree with them or if they interest you. He is a very popular author, but then for me that is a point against him, I don't like popular works much--they are a little too simplistic for me. It is one reason why I like what I call 'smart TV' shows like CSI, where you have to be fairly smart to understand the show. They are becoming more popular so I think the industry is finally catching up to the true intelligence level of the people, I never thought Hollywood gave us enough credit for our intelligence.
I would recommend the Science Fiction Book Club: http://www.sfbc.com/doc/club_url/club_url.jhtml;jsessionid=XQKQZS3E3VMZKCTI4ENCF3Y?_requestid=67821
But they have sold some of his work so it may not be as bad as I fear. I know he is similar to Steven King and I don't like what Steven King has done.

Some of them are GREAT....I rather enjoyed "Intensity", "House of the Thunder", "Watchers", and a few others.
My only complaint is that after reading several of them, they start geting a bit repetitive....he recycles some of his plots, but his characters are great.
Try one or two...they're worth a read. "Shattered" was stupid, though, IMHO.
