By all criteria of international law, Israel is a nation-state, with national sovereignty.

According to the 1933 Montevideo Convention, Israel fits the criteria of an independent nation-state: it has a permanent population, a defined territory, a government, and the capacity to enter into relations with other states.

Many nations, including the United States, and the United Nations have recognized Israel as a nation-state.

Sovereign: rightful status, independence, or prerogative

HELLZ NO Israel isnt sovereign. they stole the nation they live on. Without UN and US help Palestine would still be a nation. The only reason that they chose Palestine was for Jerusalem. Palestine had no choice in the decision. Which is why 5 arab nations declared war on Israel less than a week after the nation was founded.

note: To solve the middle east problem, solve the palestinian-israeli problem. And i dont think Bush is gonna be the one who will get it done.

Of course it is. That whole region was taken from the Ottoman Empire when it was broken up after World War 1 and was generally under British control until it was decided what to do with it. The basic plan was to split it into 2 countries, one Arab and one Jewish but this was never done until after WW2 when the UN was created. The Arab part was called Jordan and the Jewish part was called Israel.

Looking through old atlases, I have never seen an independent country called Palestine.

Israel is indeed a sovereign nation. (I believe they refer to themselves as a "state" however; that's OK, its their call.)

Israel is one of the only democracies in the Middle East (the fledgling democracy of Iraq being the other). They are one of our most loyal and trusted allies.

It is a sovereign nation and a nation that is sovereign. It has sovereignty over the territories that it was granted by the U.N. in 1948 - but not over occupied territories.
