Because women are the majority, and if women realized this they would run the Cuntry. No majority has ever allowed them selves to be as oppressed by a minority as women have.

A vote meant the women would have some power and that was the last thing they wanted any woman to have. That lasted into the 20th century and there are still some men who think women should have no rights.

It's not so much that people didn't want them to vote so much as women weren't considered citizens (just like slaves), so they didn't have voting rights.

I studied this in my property law class. Men were obligated to take care of their wives and women were obligated to provide household services like cleaning, cooking, etc. Since a woman's place was literally in the home, there was no need for their opinions/votes in the public sector.

Once women started attempting to get their own jobs and support themselves, the issue of voting became much more important and that's why the woman's suffrage movement was so important and successful in the early 20th century.

If you look at the non-support laws currently on the books, you can learn just how far women have progressed! Men are still expected to support women and yet they complain about a discrepancy concerning salaries! If you want equal salaries then you must accept changes concerning support issues as well! Now they have the vote and when they realize they have the demographics they will take more and more power onto themselves!

Because women were (and still are, we're just hammered to think that we aren't) considered to not have the same rights as men. For instance, women weren't allowed to own property, were considered property themselves, etc. We were considered second class citizens.

Having said that, there will always be bellyaching men that say women whine too much. However, think about this.....if women were at the same equality as men, we wouldn't be hearing all of the Hillary Clinton jokes. I'm not saying that she is the best candidate, but let's eliminate all of the noise.

Read your history books.
Women were not even allowed to own property and if she did,she had to turn it over to her husband when she married.
However, the women not allowed to vote situation was mostly on the east coast.
Women in the western states not only were allowed to vote, but also served as mayors, city council members, and sheriffs.
They also held various government posts because the men (ranchers, farmers and merchants were busy all day and didn't have time for other things.

i believe that it was because men had women's conditions at heart(not really). like saying that voting would put too much stress on a woman. it would take her out of the kitchen, take her mind off children and marriage, and most of all, think. heaven forbid a woman of that century think independently. but keep in mind that not all women wanted to vote.

Back then, white, rich men ran everything, and they were the only ones who considered their (own) vote of any significance. Blacks couldn't vote, poor people couldn't vote, and women couldn't vote. They considered women unintelligent, and that their place was making and raising kids, not meddling in political business

Part of it was that they thought women weren't intelligent enough in political affairs to vote, and they also believed women would just vote according to the vote of their husbands. It's biased, I know, that's just the way people were.
