The writers are striking because they get a very small royalty payment from shows downloaded off the internet while the rich producers make all the profits. Most writers don't make a whole lot of money and they just want fair pay, like everyone should have a right to, especially because these shows wouldn't exist without the writers. If that means we go without a few TV shows for a while, so be it. I think you can come up with something else to do besides watch TV.

It's not greed. When you buy a DVD, a movie THEY wrote, you know what they get? FOUR cents. They're asking for eight. For their OWN creative work.
When you download something they wrote, they get nothing even though studios make money from advertising.
When songwriters write songs, they get the royalties. When authors write books, they get the royalties. When film and television writers write, it's the same thing. It's THEIR WORK, their creation and they're entitled to the residuals. It isn't greed. Most writers aren't wealthy. They write for a show or make a film and when the show is over or the film is done, they're out of a job. They sell tires or do whatever it takes to pay the bills until they find another job but that's not even the point. The point is, they are entitled to the residuals from their own work.
You know how much writers from Gilligan's Island, Mr. Ed and I Love Lucy and such shows have made from all the millions they've earned in syndication, DVD's, etc in dozens of languages all over the world? NOTHING. Because they didn't have a union fighting for it at the time.
It's not greed.

MaryAn's answer is terrific!
For information on the strike, I suggest unitedhollywood.com . They have all the important news covered, and lots of videos explaining why the writers are striking.
Also, try fans4writers.com . You can talk to fellow fans of different shows and discuss ways to help the writers.
If you're a fan of firefly, Buffy, or Angel, Whedonesque.com is also great.
If you're a fan of MASH, Cheers, or the Simpsons, try kenlevine.blogspot.com .
Here are some good video explinations.

...there was just an episode two days ago, relax.
Also, maybe read a book. Or a newspaper, even. That would tell you a lot.

No idea when it will end. But they are striking because they want more money from DVD sales, internet sales, ect. Honestly, they are being paid enough as it is, so they should quit complaining
