When I was a teen ager, one year I had very little money, and I bought my best friend a Whitmans Sampler held by an elf...it cost about $1.00...to this day I do not remember what she bought for me, only that I was embarrassed about what I had bought for her...her gift to me was much more expensive....anyway, I wasn't going to give her her gift, because it had not cost me very much money, but I had to give her something, so i apologized that it was not very much, I will never forget that when she opened it, she seemed genuinely pleased...she hugged me and scolded me for my feelings, and told me I was her best friend!
she laughed about the elf, and posed him a dozen different ways....we gigggled and laughed at the poses and continued our friendship thru High School....in that moment I had learned that the thought and the love is all that mattered...she didn't care how much I had spent, just the fact that I had thought enough to pick out something for her meant the world!
I think you should go ahead and get her something...maybe a best friend necklace or bracelet, and let her know how much her friendship means to you.

It's great that you're thinking of her!
If you buy her a gift, she might feel obligated to buy you one. So you probably don't want to put that pressure on her.
You could either make her a lil something, like a photo of you two together in a cute frame or keychain.
Or a gag gift?
Or, you two can just have a girls night for christmas. A few days before you can suprise her and take her out for some drinks and talk about "good ol' times". Maybe you guys can then go to one of your places and watch classic christmas movies, and help each other wrap other gifts for family members.
There are a lot of things you guys can do for eachother without having to buy a gift!
Good luck and Merry Christmas!

It might make her feel bad if you buy her a traditional gift knowing she can't afford to do the same. It would be nice to do something to help her out though, since she doesn't have a job right now.

I think the BEST thing you could do for your Friend- is that JUST BEFORE the Holiday -treat her out to her Favorite Restaurant, or take her to a Movie for the Afternoon. Since you'll be doing this WITH her- SHE won't feel so "obligated", & you'll BOTH have some Quality Holiday time- together. Have a good one! :)

Well, I was thinking that same thing but just like my mom told me it is so much better to give than to recieve and even though she don't give you a gift there is nothging wrong with just being generous and just getting her a gift.

i have to agree that buying her a gift may make her feel bad for not having a gift to you.
But i would say you can make her a dinner or make some thing that require a lot of heart but not money.

Nah, you should get her a gift if you can afford it. If you think it will make her feel uncomfortable then make sure you tell her that you _wanted_ to do it for her, just to make her feel special.

I say you should get her a gift, it's only that you remember about her and that you care about them so that why you bought her one!

maybe a box of candy or a big cute pretty cellophane wrapped cookie or ginger bread man would be nice instead.
