There are waiting lists for Section 8 assistance in most areas. Prioity 1 is reserved for families with children, who get preference over others. That you would benefit from 'your own space' isn't going to change the priority status, since you are eighteen and no longer qualify as a child.

In my area priority one is the homeless. Priority two is single parents with kids. priority is disabled. I don't understand why can't either wages increase or prices lower. Why can't all apartments just base your rent on 30% of your income. This would make more sense and would cut down on section 8 waiting lists. It would also even things out for everyone so you do not have to make a lot of a money just to have a decent place to live. Something has to give here! I am so sick of paying 70% of my income in rent! I know of a few people who became homeless because they were paying 80% of their income in rent and just could not keep up in any longer! In america no one should be homeless or living in poverty. Isn't this supposed to be the richest country in the world? The wealth needs to be spread out more evenly. I think that people need to be giving more oppurtunities in life. We should allow for people on disability to work more than just a few hours if they so chose. We should allow for college students to get into affordable housing. I could go on and on.

It can take years depending on your area to get your turn in line.

They're actually trying to do away with section 8.
